The greatest threat to all motorized engine using petrol, diesel, other renewables and gas is electric vehicles. Many alternative technologies are been introduce to generate electricity that are potentially a threat.

A way of judging the threat would be to investigate the comparison of costs of energy by technology or capacity factors. In our case this market has more than a few decades to go before introducing the use of electric vehicles in Nigeria. Opportunities

Opportunities and challenges identified in the industry with beneficial key steps: -

  • Increased direct use of natural gas in homes and businesses by replacing certain electric appliances, kerosene cooking stove, wood, coal etc. with natural gas alternative
  • Reduced reliance on refined petroleum and reduced emissions by substituting diesel and petrol for gas in private vehicles, fleets and heavy-duty trucks
  • Manufacturing growth with reduced emissions by using gas in more efficient combined heat and power systems
  • Expanded use of gas-powered fuel cells and micro-turbines producing efficient, on-site energy that makes use of waste heat.
  • Challenges
  • In the long run, funding expensive infrastructure to deliver gas to more homes and businesses
  • Ensuring that gas complements “not crowds out” zero-carbon energy such as hydro, wind, and solar
  • Overcoming regulatory hurdles and a lack of incentives for on-site (distributed) power generation
  • Identifying and addressing methane leaks from the production, transmission, and distribution of natural gas
